Course Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the purpose and process of HIV/STD assessment, screening, treatment, and prevention to another person, such as a patient or peer.
  • Form a plan for how to integrate an HIV/STD interview into a forthcoming patient meeting.
  • Conduct an HIV/STD assessment with thoroughness and clarity.
  • Screen, and when appropriate, counsel a patient according to the HIV/STD Patient Screening Skills Checklist.

Learning Format: Case-based, interactive online course, including mandatory assessment questions (number of questions varies by course or module). Please also read the Technical Requirements.

About the Author (2012 - Present)

J. Dennis Fortenberry, MD, MS is Professor of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine where he specializes in adolescent medicine. He has conducted research related to adolescents, sexual behavior, and sexually transmitted infections for almost 25 years. He also provides STD care for patients of all ages at a local STD clinic.

Authors of Past Editions

John F. Toney, MD is the Medical Director of the Florida Infectious Diseases Institute at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease and International Medicine. He is also Director of Clinical Infectious Disease Research at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital. His research focuses on clinical STD/HIV therapeutics, investigational anti-infectives, and investigational vaccines.

Linda M. Kollar, RN, MSN is Clinical Director, Division of Adolescent Medicine, at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinatti. She is a Fellow of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners. Her special interests include general adolescent medicine and reproductive health.
