Outcome Objectives:

As a result of completing this activity, the participant will be better able to:

  • Incorporate into practice knowledge of prevalence of obesity in the U.S.
  • List two strategies to mitigate weight bias in clinical settings.
  • Utilize 4 motivational interviewing techniques in a clinical scenario.
  • Identify the steps of the 5 A's Behavior Change model and apply these to lifestyle counseling in a clinical scenario.

About the Author

Amit M. Algotar, MD, PhD, MPH
Dr. Algotar is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine and within the University of Arizona Cancer Center at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson. His research and clinical work focuses on lifestyle modification as a treatment modality for multiple chronic diseases. Dr. Algotar has special interests and experience in developing lifestyle modification interventions in men diagnosed with prostate cancer and receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). At the UA Cancer Center Survivorship Clinic, he uses lifestyle-based methods to help his patients prevent cancer progression and recurrence, as well as their survivorship-related needs. He also runs a lifestyle-based weight loss clinic at Banner University Medical Center – South to help patients achieve optimal weight and reduce their cancer, cardiovascular, and endocrine-related risks.

Randa Kutob, MD
Dr. Kutob is an Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson and Director of the Office of Continuing Medical Education. She is a board-certified Family Medicine physician and Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine with extensive teaching, clinical work, and research in the arena of cross-cultural care and chronic disease prevention and treatment.

Maybe some guidelines on what types of interventions we should suggest for weight loss and in which context they would be appropriate or not.
